Beyond Budgeting seems to be best designed for entities wider than software
engineering departments, and in my experience it is kind of an extended
polemic designed to get finance departments to go back to square one, think
about why they are budgeting, think about adapting rapidly to change, and
make sure they donât sacrifice profitability goals on the chopping board of
finance. Of course, many finance departments need to be shaken out of their
stupor, so this is useful. But it doesnât seem to be âa recipe.â That would
make sense, since Beyond Budgeting seeks to address whole companies, and
whole companies are widely varying.
Scaling software agility correctly, meaning that you throw out silos of
assigned engineers under specific product budgets, gives you tremendous
opportunity to get budgeting, in software, highly adaptive, too. However,
if your organization is not willing to do that, it will be your first major
barrier to getting an agile budgeting approach to work. I have made this
work. You can see hints of it in a paper I wrote, âEnterprise Scrum:
Scaling Scrum to the Executive Level.â That casé study was the largest
early implementation of ***@Scale, and ***@S lends itself extremely well to
agile budgeting. No surprise, since I tend to be buddy-buddy with finance
departments. (And now that it has a name, Iâm a ***@S trainer.)
If I got anything wrong, especially regarding Beyond Budgeting, would love
to hear your thoughts.
Really appreciate the mention, Srinivas. Hope all of you, my respected
peers, are doing great.

Not exactly Scrum, but Scrum-ish in approach, is "Beyond budgeting"....
I'm fairly sure a Danish bank is using this a lot.
Dan Greening is quite knowledgable regarding this... so you can contact
him and say I said so.
cheers

I had a request from someone developing materials for online learning for
the bank Iâm consulting with. Sheâs looking for examples of Scrum use in
banks outside of IT. I know thereâs some buzz about using Scrum in
marketing but Iâm looking for other examples, maybe ones that bank middle
managers will relate to.
Does anyone have any real world examples I can give her?
Thanks.
Michael
