Hi James,

I am inclined to answer your question, and would find it inappropriate if I
provided you an answer publicly that might be biased on a lot of stuff,
like psychological contracting, location, and actual state of the
underlying agile transition.

What would you do with answers to these questions?

This is the normal run around you get from headhunters. Figure out what you
need to make to pay the bills. If it is contract work then add in all the
other stuff like taxes, non-billing time, and other expenses.

Then consider what kind of risk you are taking on. If the gig is for a year
you don't have to worry right away about finding another gig. So, as long
as you are saving something every month you should be safe. For shorter
gigs I would ask for more because I know it has to last me until I find
something else.

Come up with a number, pad it a bit, and ask for that. If he doesn't balk
at it it is too low. If he laughs it's way too high. Otherwise, you'll
probably never know, but if you are comfortable with it who cares? You can
come down a bit if you have to, but you're better off to walk away then to
come down a lot (for at least two reasons: it makes you look like you don't
know what you are doing, and if you know what you need and you aren't
making it the stress of managing that is not worth it. Trust me, I've been
there.)

After you do this a few times it will start to suck less. Welcome to the
world of consulting.

Excellent advice Adam. (and George, and others)

I wouldn't say rates are falling, but there definitely seem to be more people out there working as coaches at cheaper rates.  A month or so back, I posted a FT SM position in the midwest that paid 200K+.  I wouldn't call that falling.

There is definitely a high correlation between pay rates and coach effectiveness.  I've been called in to do rescues a few times when people decided to go cheap at first.  Unfortunately, it ends up costing them a whole lot more in the long run than if they came to me first.  I enjoy the rescue challenge, though!

Hi James,

You can find out this information on Glassdoor. Like anything else, there
is a range.
My experience is that FTE Scrum Master roles pay similar to Sr Dev/PM
roles, in the $80k-$120k range. There are some lower than $80k and others
higher than $120k I am sure, but that range seems to be where the market is
pricing the role.

The variance for Scrum Coaches is much larger, because some companies think
of a Scrum Coach and a Scrum Master as the same thing, while the more savvy
companies tend to think of Scrum Coaching as more of an organizational
change/strategic/management consulting role. As such, I have seen ranges
from $80k-160k/year for FTEs, and day rates from $800-$4000 for
independents.

I don't think many professional consultants are going to disclose their
rates in this kind of forum (I'm certainly not.) Perhaps if we knew why you
were asking we could provide some insights short of that. Like with any
kind of consulting the numbers vary considerably and depend on a lot of
factors.

Are you trying to determine what you should pay? Or what you should charge?

Are you trying to understand what the market for Agile consultants is?
(It's pretty strong, especially if you understand the engineering side.)

See Jerry Weinberg's book, Secrets of Consulting, and price according to
the principle of least regret: low enough that you won't regret if you
don't get the job, and high enough that you won't regret if you do.

From the ads I have seen recently I would say the rates are falling which
makes sense as time goes on more people gain experience so its easier to
find suitable resources and there is no need to pay more to tempt otherwise
happy consultants

You get what you pay for, don't you think? Can you see a CSC taking the pay of a Scrum Master with 3 years experience?
